Space-themed stuff is really always at least moderately entertaining, right? I was driving west from Tucson, AZ and realized that I wasn't going to make it to the Imperial Dunes for sunset, so I figured I'd make a different kind of pit stop. I happened upon the Space Age Lodge (which is, yes, a Best Western) while perusing the internet for "weird stuff in Arizona"...of which I was sure there was an abundance (no offense, AZ). It was originally opened in 1965 by Leo Stovall, along with another similar motel in Anaheim, CA (go figure). At the time it was heralded as "the pacesetter for motels in the future." Hah! It's hard to say how influential it was in the long-run, but it's definitely entertaining in its current role as a replica of futures past. I wouldn't go too far out of my way to see this sight (unless you're *really* into cold war-era thematic motels), but it's definitely a sight to see the next time you find yourself in Gila Bend.
